episode 11 summary

Caring for Military Families

The Elizabeth Dole Foundation is the preeminent organization empowering, supporting, and honoring our nation’s 5.5 million military caregivers: the spouses, parents, family members, and friends who care for America’s wounded, ill, or injured veterans. Founded by Senator Elizabeth Dole in 2012 with the mission to strengthen, empower, and support America’s military and veteran caregivers and their families by raising public awareness, driving research, championing policy, and leading collaborations that make a significant impact on their lives.

Hidden Heroes is a campaign of the Dole Foundation focused on bringing vital attention to the untold stories of military caregivers and seeking solutions for the tremendous challenges and long-term needs they face.

Shawn Moore is one of the Dole Foundation’s Hidden Heroes and a 2017 alumna Elizabeth Dole Foundation Caregiver Fellow for the State of Missouri.

Prior to becoming a caregiver to her husband, who served for 23 years in the U.S. Army, Shawn served as a police officer for nearly 15 years in Kansas City, Missouri. Shawn’s experiences and challenges as a veteran caregiver led her to found and lead Caregivers on the Homefront to serve families who are caring for the warriors of all military eras and first responders who have been inflicted with the invisible and/or physical wounds of the wars abroad or at home.

Shawn is a passionate advocate for this cause and has presented with the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the National Alliance of Caregiving, and has shared her story on PBS News Hours, TODAY Show, and MSNBC.
