episode 1 summary
FIGHT LIKE A BOXER. THINK LIKE AN ENTREPRENEUR.
“IRON” Mike Steadman wanted to honor his mother’s wishes to attend college and fulfill his desire to join the military – the United States Naval Academy was the perfect fit. There he found his life passion for boxing and became a three-time National Collegiate Boxing Champion. He served as a Marine Corps Infantry Officer and was deployed to Afghanistan and Japan / Philippines.
After transitioning out of the military, he returned to Newark where he had spent several summers interning at St. Benedict’s Prep. He threw himself into all things entrepreneurship to learn and completed his Master’s at Rutgers and programs at Stanford Ignite and Bunker Labs where he found his tribe.
He started a boxing gym in Newark similar to the one at Annapolis and is now changing lives through boxing! His IRONBOUND Boxing Academy develops young underprivileged athletes in and out of the ring. His next challenge is launching IRONBOUND Courage Academy which combines the boxing gym with a small business incubator and co-working space to create a 21st Century “Boys and Girls Club” in Newark.
He is also giving back to other veteran entrepreneurs, with a special place in his heart for black veteran entrepreneurs. He is the author of Black Veteran Entrepreneurs and he launched IRONBOUND Media, a podcast production company to help other veteran entrepreneurs to produce podcasts.
